THE MAKING OF A MYTH
Hell’s no divine spark—it’s human tinder. Jerome’s Vulgate (4th CE) mashed Sheol, Hades, Gehenna into “infernus”—a fuse lit. Dante’s Inferno (14th CE) painted torment red. Gregory the Great (6th CE) preached brimstone to chain souls. Luther, Calvin, and King James (1611) locked it in—“hell” born of bias, not Bible.
Revelation’s “lake of fire” (20:14) gave the final twist—allegory read literal. Death’s grave, not souls’ grill—history twisted it to terrify, not teach.
